According to a survey by OTP Bank, financial awareness among young people is growing spectacularly
The financial awareness of the Hungarian population continues to grow, and this is most noticeable among the younger generation – OTP concluded based on the financial institution’s self-care index research, which it informed MTI about in a statement on Thursday.
The OTP Self-Care Index decreased by one point this year to 53 points, but despite the minimal decline, mainly due to the economic environment, several positive trends are emerging – they announced.
According to the survey, financial confidence has increased in all age groups, which was among young people the most dynamic: two-thirds of 18-24 year-olds (64 percent) already feel financially confident, which is a 10 percentage point increase compared to the previous year – they wrote.
70 percent of young people believe that they have a significant influence on how their lives turn out, which is an 11 percentage point increase in one year, and the proportion of those who save regularly has increased noticeably, especially in the 25-30 year-old age group.
A positive trend is that 31 percent of the population keeps some kind of financial statement.
One of the findings of this year’s research The most encouraging message is that the young generation is not drifting, but is consciously shaping its financial future – the announcement quoted Endre Máriás, head of banking relations at OTP Bank.
The survey revealed that 40 percent of those entering the OTP Pension Fund in 2025 were from the 16-34 age group, while the number of new customers aged 16-24 has doubled in the past three years. According to OTP, all this indicates that Generation Z is no longer postponing its future, but is consciously and timely starting to create its financial security.
The OTP Self-Care Index survey was conducted between August and September by interviewing 1,500 domestic customers between the ages of 18 and 70 with a bank account. The representative survey has been conducted every year since 2011.
