All tested animal equipment failed the NKFH laboratory test
The accredited laboratory of the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) tested popular pet equipment for product safety, including LED collars and leashes, as well as aquarium lights. None of the 20 products tested met safety standards, so the unsafe products will be withdrawn from the market.
Animal protection is a particularly important social factor in the 21st century, therefore, in order to promote and develop responsible animal husbandry and animal protection, it is justified that, as in previous years, laboratory testing of pet equipment should be carried out. The accredited Mechanical and Electrical Laboratory of the NKFH also tested aquarium lights, LED collars and LED leashes, as well as hair clippers, hot air brushes and electric brushes. The samples were obtained from specialist shops, stores operated in the Far East and an online store.
While last year there was a significant 90% objection rate, this year the experts made even more serious findings: out of the 20 products tested, not one met the requirements of the relevant standards. The full product list is available on the NKFH website (www.nkfh.gov.hu).
Particularly serious risks were identified for products powered by Li-ion batteries: since the temperature of the cells is not monitored by the circuits in the devices, lithium-based batteries can catch fire or explode due to heat. During the test, the laboratory therefore examined the presence and proper functioning of temperature monitoring.
Products that come into or may come into contact with water are at greater risk of electric shock. In connection with this, aquarium lamps have regulations regarding the tightness of the product, mechanical strength, and that the switch must only be two-pole. In products intended for outdoor use, the power cord must not be made of PVC, unlike indoor lamps. The laboratory also examined the strain relief and cross-section of the power cord, the plug, and the adequacy of the insulation.
Due to the identified product safety problems, government agencies under the professional guidance of the NKFH always initiate official procedures and take the necessary market surveillance measures, such as withdrawing the product from the market and recalling it from customers. The goal of the NKFH is to ensure that pets are safe and that customers receive safe and appropriate products, which is why tests are ongoing.
