17% Swiss online stores offer free delivery
Of the 47 biggest online stores in Switzerland, only 17 percent offer free shipping this year. A majority of 64 percent offers free shipping above a threshold value. Another 19 percent always charges for delivering goods. These data are approximately the same as those in 2023.
Carpathia, an ecommerce management consultancy, has recently published a top 50 of the biggest business-to-consumer online stores in Switzerland. Now, it has also analyzed the shipping conditions of those stores. However, only 47 of them were included in the analysis, as Microspot integrated into Interdiscount. Ecommerce platforms eBay and Ricardo were also not taken into consideration, because their shipping conditions depend on the partner seller.
Delivery within 24 hours offered more often
When comparing the new report to the results of last year’s, it is evident that more online shops are now offering delivery within 24 hours. Specifically, online stores that offer this service for a fee have increased from 4 to 17 percent in a year. The majority of the biggest online stores still do not offer this service (66 percent).
On average, shipping costs 6.85 euros (6.63 Swiss Francs) at the stores that were analyzed. This is a slight decrease from last year, when shipping cost an average of 7.41 euros (7.17 Swiss Francs).
Free delivery not common in DACH region
According to earlier research from German retail institute EHI, only a fraction of online sellers in the DACH region offer free delivery. This could be related to the fact that preventing returns is a significant focus for sellers in that region, as returns cost them between 5 and 10 euros. The results of this study thus are in line with that earlier study.
