The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) monitors the processes taking place in the food market and intervenes if necessary. The GVH operates the free online Price Watch system, in which the prices of around 2,000 different food products can be monitored on a daily basis, in more than 1,200 stores across the country. By using Price Watch, Hungarian families can save money and time. The system ensuring price comparability will soon be expanded with new product categories.

Food inflation rose to six percent in January 2025, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) announced on Tuesday. The price increase was particularly significant for certain basic foodstuffs compared to the data from a year earlier.

The Hungarian Competition Authority monitors market processes in individual product chains – for example, in the case of eggs or dairy products – and is ready to intervene if justified or to support initiatives aimed at reducing prices. At the end of January, Csaba Balázs Rigó, the President of the Hungarian Competition Authority, sent a letter of demand to several interest groups representing producers and processors of basic foodstuffs. According to the national competition authority, price increase announcements regularly issued by interest groups may violate fair market competition and increase inflationary pressure.

In addition, the Hungarian Competition Authority continuously operates the online Price Monitoring System available at www.arfigyelo.gvh.hu, in which customers can currently follow the daily updated prices of more than 2,000 different food products in 78 product categories in 1,277 stores of six large retail chains nationwide. By using the shopping list function and the map-based store filter, families can save money and time during their shopping.
