Italian Prime Minister Says Trade War Must Be Avoided
The tariff war between the United States and the European Union is not in the interest of either party, and an agreement must be reached to avoid a trade war, the Italian prime minister said after Donald Trump announced new general tariffs on American imports.
Giorgia Meloni called the tariffs imposed on the European Union a mistake, the imposition of which, she said, was not in the interest of either party.
“We will do everything to reach an agreement with the United States, keeping in mind the avoidance of a trade war that could inevitably weaken the West to the benefit of other global players,”
the prime minister wrote.
Meloni added that the Roman government is acting above all to protect the interests of Italy and its economy.
The prime minister’s office in Rome announced that Giorgia Meloni will receive US Vice President J. D. Vance on April 19. According to preliminary plans, the Italian prime minister is preparing for the White House in May.
Instead of a counterattack, Europe needs a creative response, said Roberto Vanvassori, president of the Anfia automotive association. He said that US exports of vehicles and parts made in Italy amount to five billion euros a year and that the 25 percent tariff imposed by Washington could cause significant damage to the sector.
