MKIK seeks partnerships with businesses and government
The Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK) strives for partnerships with both businesses and the government, because the country’s development can only be guided by cooperation, the organization’s president said at the opening of the MKIK economic year in Budapest on Thursday.
According to Elek Nagy, the chamber must form a bridge between entrepreneurs and decision-makers, as the Hungarian economy has reached a crossroads.
As he put it,
in the past a decade and a half of success story, but further growth requires a change in perspective. The position of the Hungarian economy in the global order must be reinterpreted so that it can rely not only on domestic labor and industrial capacity, but also on technological and knowledge-based systems in international competition
– he added.
The President of the MKIK considers one of the most difficult challenges to be the situation known as the middle-income country trap. Only a small number of the states that have reached this point have been able to escape from it, all of them have chosen the knowledge- and technology-based development path. The Hungarian economy has successfully filled the available frameworks, now these frameworks must be pushed forward with a policy that encourages “frontier innovation”.
However, the key to change will always be the innovative entrepreneur, who, relying on the supportive background created in cooperation with the government and the chamber, can believe that “what is not there will be”, and with this approach is able to create a value system that holds society together – he said.
According to Elek Nagy, in addition to hard work, it is important to keep in mind that importing technology is no longer enough today, a strong research and development infrastructure is an essential condition, and we must also move beyond the approach that the sources of innovation can only be large companies. The opposite is proven by a number of examples in the United States or the Far East, and it is a great pity that Europe has fallen behind in this competition.
In the short term, we must strive to maintain stability, in the longer term, to build a digital-smart state that helps productivity, and to make Hungary the most significant service center in the region, building on the global companies that are settling here. In addition, in a 5-10 year perspective, a knowledge and engineering state similar to Finland and Israel must be built. In this process, entrepreneurship is a basic cell of the economy, which is not simply a profit-making, but a creative community that creates social value
– he added.
