LG has established a new air conditioning R&D lab in Europe
LG Electronics (LG) has established a new aerospace research and development (R&D) laboratory in Frankfurt, Germany. The lab is LG’s third such facility, the company previously opened a similar facility in Changwon, South Korea, and Atlanta, USA.
The new approximately 1,000 square meter lab will primarily focus on the development of high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions adapted to Europe’s diverse local climates. Specialists will conduct research and testing on a wide range of residential and light industrial HVAC systems, including heat pumps, energy monitoring systems and energy management platforms. By implementing a comprehensive, regionally focused R&D program, LG would strengthen its presence on the HVAC solutions market in Europe.
The new lab will collaborate with the company’s recently launched organization, the European Consortium for Advanced Heat Pump Research (ECAHR), to develop heat pumps capable of reliable, outstanding heating performance during the harsh winter weather typical of Northern Europe. In addition, to strengthen the capabilities of the European HVAC business, LG plans to nurture and actively recruit local talent in areas such as heat pump design and smart home technology.
The European HVAC market, which is of prime importance to LG, is expected to see significant growth in the coming years thanks to the European Union’s long-term energy policy. These include the REPowerEU plan, which aims to reduce energy consumption, diversify energy supply, expand renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels by 2030. The EU’s Green Deal also targets a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and then by 2040 in order to reach the goal of a completely carbon-neutral society by 2050.
