The winning projects of Tesco’s competition supporting children, young people and local communities can start with the start of school – nearly 2 million people voted for them
After the first bell rang on September 1, children once again took center stage in schools. Just as part of the summer break was spent preparing for the autumn period in educational institutions, Tesco customers were also busy during the vacation. Between July 14 and August 10, nearly 2 million people voted for local projects supporting young people, primarily preschool and school-age children, in the supermarket chain’s “Start for the Future” application program, to decide which ones would receive the most support. The 164 winning organizations will share a total of more than 56 million forints. The organization that receives the most votes in all 58 districts will receive 500,000 forints, the second-place winner 300,000, and the third-place winner 150,000 forints to implement their project.
The most exciting phase of the second round of the “Start for the Future” program, which began this spring, has recently concluded, and the winners will soon be able to begin implementing their applications, which aim to improve the living conditions and physical and mental development of children and young adults living in their immediate surroundings. In Tesco’s application program, customers who entered the stores during the summer decided how much support each project in each district would receive. After each purchase, they received a token, which they could throw into the token collector placed next to the initiative they liked the most in the store’s foyer.
“This time, we gave the opportunity to our customers to decide, who thus decided the fate of 164 applications. Nearly 2 million people took advantage of the opportunity. The most votes, 51,209, were cast at the Tesco hypermarket in Békéscsaba, and the most votes nationwide, more than 105 thousand, were cast for the cooking program for children with type 1 diabetes of the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Association for the Support of Children with Diabetes. I am very pleased that through our application program, we can take part in the lives of local young communities, among other things, through such unique and useful initiatives,” said Nóra Hevesi, Head of Communications at Tesco-Global Zrt.
During the summer, Tesco customers were able to vote for, among other things, a high school debate club, a sustainability children’s conference and a school gastronomy club, a friends club to help connect autistic young people, the creation of a green institutional courtyard to provide experiential learning, a recreational soul corner to develop the mental health of people with disabilities, and folk dance teaching to preserve tradition.
Based on the number of tokens, the company is supporting 164 applicant organizations nationwide with more than 56 million forints, and is awarding special prizes to the Borsod-Abaúj Zemplén County Missing Link Foundation, the Budapest Lilatinta Foundation for Reading, the Fejér County JóPont Foundation, the Pest County Mese Az Kell Foundation, and the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Children and Youth Self-Government for their creativity and comprehensive approach.
