Insura.hu: those planning a vacation abroad can expect travel insurance premiums 5-6 percent higher than last year
Those planning a vacation abroad can expect travel insurance premiums to be 5-6 percent higher this year than last year; the average daily premium for travel insurance policies taken out online in the first five months of this year was 742 forints, while it was 704 forints in the same period last year, the insurance broker Insura.hu told MTI on Tuesday, based on its own statistics.
According to the company, the average daily premium in the most popular destination countries generally provides a fair level of coverage for accident and health insurance, as well as other important general risks.
32 percent of travel insurance policies taken out with Insura last summer were for trips to Croatia, 14 percent to Italy, and 9 percent to Austria, with 55 percent of all trips being divided between the three countries. There is no significant change in these proportions this year, they indicated.
The length of insured summer trips typically ranges between 4 and 8 days, with 66 percent of all trips falling into this category. The 8-day outbound trip is by far the most common.
Depending on the nature and purpose of the trip, travelers can find a wide range of additional insurance options. Most summer trips are to nearby countries, and travelers typically travel by car, which is why the proportion of people using car assistance also increases in the summer. Last year, 43 percent of summer travel insurance contracts requested this service.
In the case of air travel, an increasingly wide range of travel insurance policies offer additional coverage for flight delays and cancellations. However, some insurers only offer such an additional service for travel insurance policies taken out several days before the trip, the insurance broker pointed out.
The statement also recalled that, according to data from the Hungarian National Bank (MNB), travel insurance premium income increased by 14.3 percent last year and approached 22.1 billion forints.
Founded in 1994, Insura is an independent insurance brokerage company that sells the products of 17 insurance companies through its insurance brokerage partners.
