Tens of millions of domestic blooming ornamental plants may be on the market this year as well
After last year’s record turnover, strong demand is expected again this year on the annual ornamental plants market. Domestic horticulture is preparing for the season with around 8-10 million geranium plants and 22-25 million other annual seedlings. The National Chamber of Agriculture and the Interprofessional Association of Hungarian Ornamental Gardeners advise buyers to prefer domestic horticultural stores and those producing gardens that sell from home. The gardeners can give a lot of advice to customers, and in addition to ornamental plants, they also help in choosing vegetable seedlings.
Hungarian ornamental gardeners await the beginning of the sales period for plants blooming in spring with high hopes. Although compared to the average of the past years, they are preparing for the season with slightly fewer seedlings this year, according to the hopes of the industry players, all the annual, biennial and perennial plants on the market will find a host this year. According to the joint market overview of the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Hungarian Ornamental Gardeners Association, about 8-10 million geranium seedlings and about 22-25 million seedlings of other blooming ornamental plants may be on the market this year.
According to the expectations of ornamental gardeners, after last year’s record sales, the demand for domestically grown annual, biennial and perennial ornamental plants will be strong this year as well
The most popular flowering ornamental plant is still the geranium, of which countless types can be found in gardens. In addition to geraniums, begonias, different types of petunias, bakopa, iron grass and dahlias are the most sought after on the domestic market. In addition, the horticulture stores offer customers many other annual, biennial and perennial ornamental plant species. In recent years, herbs and potted green plants that can be grown on the balcony have become more and more popular. A minimal increase in producer prices is expected this year. Last year’s inflation and the increase in the price of input materials are only slightly reflected in the prices, as producers fear that the higher prices may scare away buyers. Although we will certainly encounter some imported goods this season as well, domestic cultivation is the dominant factor in this segment. The reason for this is that importing seasonal flowers is not a cheap pastime, and the plants also do not tolerate long transport well and lose their quality.
Hungarian plants also have a good reputation abroad, for example many people from neighboring countries come to Hungary to buy flowering ornamental plants
In recent years, however, the amount sold in this way seems to be decreasing, and it is becoming more and more common for foreign growers of ornamental plants to appear on the domestic market and grow ready-made products in their home country from the propagating material purchased here. The biggest advantage of annual ornamental plants grown in Hungary is that they are healthy and of high quality, so we can be sure that they will be the ornaments of the balcony or the garden all summer long if they are planted professionally, their needs are met, and they are carefully cared for. Although we can often find ornamental plant sellers by the side of the road today, we would do better to prefer domestic horticultural stores and those producing gardens that sell from home. The gardeners can give a lot of advice to customers, and in addition to ornamental plants, they also help in choosing vegetable seedlings.
