The European heat wave and climate change are reorganizing tourism
In the InfoRádió Aréna program, tourism expert Róbert Richárd Kiss analyzed the effects of the European heat wave and climate change on tourism. According to the expert, extreme weather conditions set new directions for tourism and can extend the tourist season, but at the same time they also bring significant challenges.
The unbearable heat, which is breaking heat records across Europe, is drawing tourists further north. According to this year’s figures, northern destinations such as Scotland and Sweden are increasingly popular, with growth outpacing the expansion of traditional southern destinations. One of the reasons for this is that low-cost airlines are launching new flights to the Scandinavian region, thus making previously more expensive areas cheaper.
The extreme heat affects the southern countries particularly badly, for example in Greece the opening hours of tourist attractions were also limited. Some tourists prefer cooler places, so the appeal of the Nordic countries, for example, is increasing. Although the growth of northern destinations is significant, in terms of the total number of visitors they do not yet threaten the position of traditional tourist destinations such as France or Italy. France, for example, receives 90 million visitors a year, while the Nordic countries attract only a few million tourists.
