The European Commission has authorised the import of genetically modified soybeans into the EU
The European Commission has authorised the import of genetically modified soybeans into the EU and their use in food and feed, the EU’s executive body announced on Friday.
According to a statement from Brussels, the decision only authorises the import of these genetically modified soybeans into the EU for use in food and feed, but not their cultivation in the European Union.
The decision was taken after an assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that the genetically modified product is as safe as its conventional counterpart, it highlighted.
“The European Food Safety Authority’s comprehensive and rigorous assessment procedure ensures a high level of protection of human and animal health and the environment,” it said.
The authorisation is valid for 10 years. Products made from genetically modified soybeans are subject to EU labelling and traceability rules.
