Eurozone retail sales fell month-on-month, but rose year-on-year in September
Retail turnover in the eurozone fell in September compared to the previous month, but increased in annual comparison.
According to data published on Thursday by the statistical office of the European Union, Eurostat, retail turnover in September fell by 0.1 percent in the eurozone compared to the 0.2 percent increase expected by analysts, and stagnated in the European Union, after a monthly contraction of 0.1 percent was recorded in both the eurozone and the EU in the previous month.
In the European Union, the previous Compared to the previous month, retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco products shrank by 0.2 percent in September, while non-food products excluding fuel stagnated and fuel sales shrank by 0.9 percent on a monthly basis.
In the euro area, retail sales grew by 1.0 percent year-on-year in the ninth month of the year, in line with analysts’ expectations, following a 1.6 percent expansion in August.
In the European Union, retail sales grew by 1.3 percent year-on-year in September, after a 1.6 percent expansion a month earlier.
In September, the largest year-on-year increases in total retail trade turnover in the European Union were recorded in Cyprus (8.5 percent), Malta (6.6 percent) and Bulgaria (5.7 percent), while the largest decreases were recorded in Italy (2.3 percent), Romania (2.1 percent) and Belgium (0.8 percent).
