Euro zone inflation rose to 2.6 percent in May
Eurozone inflation was higher than the 2.5 percent expected by analysts, at 2.6 percent in May, exceeding April’s 2.4 percent, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, announced as non-final data on Friday.
A year earlier, in May of last year, the rate of annual increase in the euro zone consumer price index was 6.1 percent.
In a monthly comparison, consumer prices increased by 0.2 percent in May after 0.6 percent in April.
According to Eurostat’s preliminary calculations, energy prices rose by 0.3 percent year-on-year in May, after an annual decrease of 0.6 percent was recorded in April.
The annual growth rate of the prices of food, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products slowed to 2.6 percent in May from 2.8 percent in April.
