The pace of consumer price increases in the euro area accelerated in September

Annual inflation in the euro area accelerated in September as analysts had expected, according to preliminary data published by the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, on Wednesday.

The annual inflation rate in the euro area rose to 2.2 percent in September, from 2.0 percent in August, based on the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), calculated for EU comparison purposes.

A year earlier, in September 2024, the annual rate of increase in consumer prices in the euro area was 1.7 percent.

Prices in the euro area rose by 0.1 percent compared to the previous month, after the same increase was recorded in August.

According to a statement from Eurostat, preliminary data show that energy prices fell by 0.4 percent compared to September last year, after an annual decline of 2.0 percent in August.

In September, the annual growth in prices of services accelerated to 3.2 percent from 3.1 percent in the previous month. The increase in the price of food, alcohol and tobacco products decreased from 3.2 percent to 3.0 percent, and the annual price increase in non-energy industrial products was 0.8 percent in September, the same as in the previous month.

The annual core inflation rate in the euro area, calculated without the prices of energy, food, alcohol and tobacco products, was the same as in the previous month, 2.3 percent in September.
