EU adopts rule to prevent destruction of unsold clothing

The European Commission adopted new measures on Monday to prevent the destruction of unsold clothing, clothing accessories and footwear under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).

The Brussels body said the rules would help reduce waste, environmental damage and create a level playing field for companies using sustainable business models.

It said: Every year in Europe, around 4-9 percent of unsold textiles are destroyed, which is around generates 5.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Remember: the Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products requires companies to disclose information on unsold consumer goods that are thrown away as waste.

The legislation under the Regulation introduces a ban on the destruction of unsold clothing, clothing accessories and footwear, encouraging companies to manage their inventory more efficiently, provide for returns and explore opportunities for resale, remanufacturing, donation or reuse rather than throwing it away.

It also defines the justified circumstances in which destruction may be permitted, for example for safety reasons or due to product damage.

The ban on the destruction of unsold clothing, clothing accessories and footwear will apply to large companies from July 19, and they will have one year to comply. The regulation is expected to apply to medium-sized companies from 2030, they were informed.
