The EU is a net exporter of eggs and egg products

According to data from the European Commission, the EU (EU27) was a net exporter of eggs and egg products in the first half of 2025. Although imports increased by 38 percent to almost 79 thousand tonnes compared to the same period of the previous year, exports were significantly higher, at 189 thousand tonnes (+5 percent). The EU’s largest target countries remained the United Kingdom, Japan and Switzerland.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office, Hungary purchased 12.9 thousand tonnes of shell eggs from the international market in the first eight months of 2025 (-12 percent compared to the same period of the previous year), of which it imported 10.2 thousand tonnes of fresh eggs, 15 percent less. Exports of shell eggs decreased by 5 percent to 6.9 thousand tonnes, of which fresh egg exports accounted for 1.6 thousand tonnes (+93 percent) between January and August 2025. According to data from the European Commission, the packing house price of table eggs in the EU was almost 260 euros/100 kilograms in the first forty weeks of 2025, an increase of 23.1 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. According to data from AKI PÁIR, the packing house price of table eggs (M+L) from cage farming in Hungary was 63.39 forints/piece in the first forty weeks of 2025, which exceeded the average price of the same period of 2024 by 31.1 percent. The packing house price of M size-class boxed eggs increased by 29.0 percent to 65.91 forints/piece, and that of L size-class boxed eggs by 26.5 percent to 76.16 forints/piece. The packing house price of M-tray eggs increased by 32.3 percent to HUF 57.31/piece, and that of L-tray eggs increased by 36.1 percent to HUF 63.89/piece. The packing house price of deep-litter table eggs (M+L) was HUF 72.44/piece in the first forty weeks of 2025, which is 27.2 percent higher than the average price for the same period in 2024.
