The EU has sent a request for information about an illegal product to AliExpress
The European Commission sent its request for information to the online trading platform AliExpress on Monday, asking the giant company to provide information on what measures it has taken to protect consumers online, in particular with regard to the online distribution of illegal products, such as counterfeit medicines, the Brussels body said.
Regarding the inquiry, Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner responsible for the internal market, said:
“The Digital Services Act is not only about tackling hate speech, disinformation and cyberbullying. It also aims to ensure the removal of illegal or unsafe products sold in the EU through digital commerce platforms, including counterfeit and potentially life-threatening drugs and pharmaceutical products.”
The Chinese company must provide the requested information to the committee by November 27. Based on the evaluation of AliExpress’s responses, the board will consider the next steps. Pursuant to the Digital Services Act, the commission can impose fines for incorrect, incomplete or misleading information provided in the application. If the company does not respond to the inquiry in time, the board may decide to request the information in a decision. In this case, failure to respond by the deadline may result in the imposition of a periodic fine, the European Commission pointed out.
