The EU would accelerate the spread of artificial intelligence in industry and science
The European Commission has presented a strategy to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence in key industries and the public sector and to put Europe at the forefront of AI-driven science and research, the EU Commission said on Wednesday.
According to the Brussels statement, the strategy is needed because artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming the way businesses operate, public services and revolutionizing science.
The strategy aims to harness the transformative potential of artificial intelligence by encouraging the adoption of technology in the strategic and public sectors, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, energy, mobility, manufacturing, construction, agri-food, defense, communications and culture. It also aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises in meeting their specific needs and help industries integrate artificial intelligence into their operations.
Specific measures include the creation of advanced health screening centres based on artificial intelligence, as well as supporting developments in the fields of manufacturing, the environment and the pharmaceutical industry.
“The strategy will contribute to strengthening EU action to deliver societal benefits, from enabling more accurate health diagnoses to improving the efficiency and accessibility of public services, while taking into account the benefits and risks of the technology,” they said.
The strategy also aims to make the EU a hub for scientific innovation based on artificial intelligence through training, retaining talent and attracting people with the right skills to European jobs, the EU Commission added in its statement.
