According to a statement from the EU Commission, farmers affected by adverse weather events in Bulgaria in 2025 will receive €7.4 million, Estonians €3.3 million and Hungarians €10.8 million in exceptional EU support. The EU support can be matched by up to 200 percent from national resources, it noted. National authorities must allocate the support by September 30 and ensure that farmers are the final beneficiaries, it said.

The three EU Member States concerned must notify the European Commission of the details of the implementation of the measures

The details to be notified include the criteria used to determine the granting of individual support, the planned impact of the measure, monthly forecasts of payments and the level of additional support planned to be granted. The notification must also include measures taken to avoid distortions of competition and overcompensation.

Recall: Bulgaria was hit by severe drought and heat waves between mid-June and the end of August, which significantly reduced sunflower and maize production

In Estonia, the wet period following spring frosts damaged spring wheat, barley, peas, rapeseed, potatoes and fruit and vegetables, among others. In Hungary, the exceptional heat and water shortages experienced between June and August caused significant heat stress, which also adversely affected sweetcorn, melons, sorghum and maize, among others.
