The EU’s 2050 carbon neutrality targets are unrealistic
The European Union’s Fit for 55 program (Going for 55 percent!) contains unrealistic objectives, therefore the climate neutrality target set for 2050 must be abandoned, achieving carbon neutrality is realistically conceivable by 2070 – said Energy Minister Csaba Lantos at the Energy Sovereignty 2026 conference in Budapest on Monday.
He acknowledged that in the Fit for 55 program, member states pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. This has now reached 37-39 percent at the EU level, while Hungary has already achieved 48 percent.
To meet the goals, instead of the 1.1 percent reduction in greenhouse gases (GHG) per year according to previous plans, a reduction of about 3.2 percent per year would be necessary, which is not feasible, and there is no detailed plan and adequate financing available for this, he emphasized.
According to Csaba Lantos, the thinking of European leaders is characterized by another “ism”, “greenism” (green idea), which if followed, Europe will never be competitive, this policy will kill European industry.
