The EP committee voted for the possibility of extending the ban on GMO legislative amendment
The Environment and Public Health Committee of the European Parliament (EP) on Tuesday voted for the possibility of extending the ban – changing the current rules – on GMO legislative amendment. The amendment would widely allow Member States to prohibit genetically modified organisms (GMO) cultivation in their territory, despite the EU-wide authorization.
Marco Contiero, agricultural policy director for Greenpeace, in the international environmental organization's statement praised the proposal voted by the EP Committee which – according to his words – is a much better text, adopted in the Council of the Member States, because that text was strongly influenced by the pro-GMO UK government position.
