The EP rejected the legislative proposal aimed at reducing the use of plant protection agents
At the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, it rejected the amendments to the European Commission’s proposal on the sustainable use of plant protection products.
According to the EU Parliament, 299 representatives rejected the European Commission’s proposal and its amendments, 207 supported it, and 121 abstained from voting.
With the vote, the European Parliament closed the first reading. The Council of the European Union, which brings together the ministers of the member states, has yet to decide on its own position on the proposal in order to decide whether it will be definitively rejected or sent back to the European Parliament for a second reading.
As part of the European Green Deal, the European Commission presented a proposal on the sustainable use of pesticides in June 2022, which set EU-level, legally binding targets for a 50 percent reduction in the use and risk of chemical-based pesticides and the use of hazardous pesticides by 2050.
