In the first quarter, the number of pigs slaughtered in slaughterhouses increased
1,160,000 pigs were slaughtered at Hungarian slaughterhouses in the first quarter of 2024, 6.2 percent more (+67,000 pigs) than in January-March 2023. The total live weight of slaughtered animals was 138,000 tons, and their carcass weight was 111,000 tons, i.e. 6.8 and 6.7 percent higher than the value of the same period of the previous year.
Pig slaughter in live weight averaged nearly 46,000 tons per month, while the highest monthly value in January exceeded 47,000 tons. Within pig slaughter, the slaughter of sows decreased from 15.6 thousand in the first quarter of the previous year – by almost 6 percent – to 14.7 thousand in the period January-March 2024. The volume of exports of live pigs increased by 71 percent and imports by 13 percent in 2024 I–II. month, compared to the same period in 2023 (KSH), the turnover increased by 27 percent. Exports were 6,000 tons and imports were 12,000 tons, i.e. imports were twice as much as exports. Live pigs came mainly from Slovakia, Croatia and Germany, exports were mostly directed to Romania, Austria and Albania in the period January-February 2024.
