AutoWallis Group may acquire the distribution rights for Nissan in Romania together with the dominant player in the European automotive market, the Portuguese Salvador Caetano Group, and thus become the new national importer of the brand. The transaction is subject to competition authority approval. The new company is expected to start operations on June 1, 2025.

AutoWallis Group, as the dominant integrated car dealership and mobility service provider in the Central and Eastern European region, has signed an agreement with Nissan Europe and the Portuguese Salvador Caetano Group. According to the agreement, AutoWallis Caetano Zrt., owned 50-50 by the two companies, will acquire the exclusive distribution rights for Nissan in Romania. As a result, if the regulatory conditions are met, the two car dealership and mobility service providers will acquire equal shares in the new company, which is expected to start operations on June 1, 2025.

Gábor Ormosy, CEO of AutoWallis, said in connection with the agreement: “We are delighted to be partners with Nissan and to expand our successful cooperation with the Salvador Caetano Group in a new area.” He added that while this is the third joint venture between the Hungarian and Portuguese companies (the AutoWallis and Caetano Group joint ventures hold the Hungarian import rights for the Renault, Dacia and Alpine brands, and jointly own the recently opened AutoWallis Renault and Dacia dealership in Budapest), the AutoWallis Group will continue its independent growth, developments, acquisitions and implementation of its strategy in other areas.

According to Charbel Abi Ghanem, Nissan’s Vice President for European Independent Markets, the Salvador Caetano Group is already a reliable partner for Nissan in Portugal, so it was obvious to extend the cooperation to Romania. AutoWallis Group is recognized for its extensive experience in Central and Eastern Europe, and there is great potential to leverage the similarities with their brand and business model. This agreement is great news for both Nissan and their Romanian customers.

Sergio Riberio, Board Member and CEO of Salvador Caetano Group, responsible for global automotive distribution, said that the agreement is another step in the partnership between Salvador Caetano and Nissan and in the implementation of their European expansion plans. He added that their collaboration with AutoWallis Group offers exciting opportunities to further develop the foundations of their strategy and the renaissance of the Nissan brand in Romania.

The transaction was also welcomed by Pál Bihari, Head of Wholesale Business at AutoWallis, who said that Nissan is a key player in the automotive industry, known for its innovation and commitment to sustainability. He added that Nissan is at the forefront of new technological developments and plays a pioneering role in the field of electric vehicles, so it will be an honor to represent the brand in Romania.
