Government spokeswoman Alexandra Szentkirályi previously announced that price raids would be launched in stores where the price hiked products could not be found on the shelves. The most recent Government Information Agency said that during the inspections, compliance with the price caps was investigated in 468 stores, and the authorities imposed penalties in 179 cases.
According to the government spokesperson, the most common violation was that the price-fixed products were not available on the shelves, while there were plenty of them in the warehouse. When asked by Magyar Nemzet, he said that the authorities most often come across inadequate stocks of granulated sugar, 2.8 percent UHT milk and flour.
The Hungarian government and the Economic Competition Authority (GVH) are working together to enforce the price cap and are planning to launch an online price monitor, which is expected to be operational at the beginning of summer. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also spoke about the introduction of price caps, but emphasized that the government cannot yet introduce price caps. They strive to reduce inflation, and he believes that its break will be felt in April, and then a definite decline is expected in May-June.
They want to ensure that there is real competition between products and that prices start to go down.
