The margin freeze could be extended to toiletries as well
Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy announced in a video posted on his Facebook page that, in addition to food, the margin reduction would be extended to household toiletries used in everyday life.
According to the Minister, these products – such as detergents, dishwashing detergents, shower gels, baby care products and diapers – significantly influence the development of inflation, and therefore they see it as necessary to reduce margins in this segment as well.
The minister emphasized that margins of up to 30 percent have been observed in certain product groups. The new regulation will not only apply to individual products, but also to the stores that sell them: Márton Nagy mentioned the DM, Rossmann and Müller supermarket chains as examples, but the measure will apply to all stores that sell the affected products.
The Hungarian government introduced the mark-up freeze on several basic foodstuffs in March 2025, such as eggs, cooking oil, sugar, potatoes, milk, chicken breast, pork leg and flour. According to the regulation, retailers can charge a maximum of 10 percent mark-up on the affected products. The cabinet’s aim was to contribute to reducing food inflation. The now planned extension would further strengthen this intention in the market for everyday consumer goods.
