A thousand ice cream scoop coupons will be hidden around Lake Balaton starting Sunday on the occasion of American Ice Cream Day. The campaign aims to draw attention to the diversity and quality of ice creams on Lake Balaton, the Balaton Tourism Association, which organized the event, informed MTI.

The aim of the initiative, which will last the entire summer, is to promote local artisanal ice cream shops in a playful way and make ice cream a real summer experience in the region, they wrote.

In the campaign, ice cream scoops will be hidden in the form of coupons at popular locations on Lake Balaton, including beaches, promenades and lookouts. The lucky ones can get a free ice cream with one coupon they find at pastry shops that participated in this year’s Balaton Ice Cream competition. Families will be able to search for the coupons from Veszprém, through Balatonfüred, all the way to Balatongyörök.

The Balaton fairy tale hero, Captain Füred, is also participating in the campaign, promoting the importance of reading: ice cream coupons are packaged in storybooks related to travel and family ice cream.

According to the announcement, Ice Cream Day was declared an official holiday by US President Ronald Reagan in 1984 to recognize the importance of ice cream in American culture and economy. According to the decree, July is “National Ice Cream Month”, and “National Ice Cream Day” is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month (July 20 this year), when ice cream manufacturers, confectioneries and fast food restaurants across the country celebrate with various promotions, free tastings and programs.

As they wrote, Ronald Reagan’s favorite ice cream was vanilla, so most of the coupons for the Balaton “treasure hunt” will entitle you to ice cream of this flavor, but many other types of ice cream are also offered in the campaign. According to the organizers of the event, Americans consume more than four times as much ice cream as Hungarians, more than twenty liters.
