The role of veterinarians is indispensable in agriculture
Nowadays, more and more attention is paid to safe food supply. Veterinarians have a special role in this, both in protecting the health of animals, and in the fight against infectious diseases or in the examination of the meat of animals destined for slaughter, said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy at the opening of the EU-Western Balkan Chief Veterinarian Summit on Wednesday in the Városliget.
At the event, the head of the ministry spoke about how producing and selling food has always had a special responsibility in the history of mankind, and it is no different in the 21st century. Our attention is always much greater when it comes to things that end up on our table as raw materials or in processed form. Our country is extremely proud of its animal health service, launched more than 136 years ago, which has proven its ability, professional preparation and quick reaction capability even in the midst of many challenges in recent years.
István Nagy also mentioned that one of the most important tasks in Hungary is the protection against bird flu
At the same time, attention should be paid to swine fever, and also to the rabies virus appearing along the border as a result of the lack of vaccination due to the war in Ukraine. It is reassuring to know that all these diseases are under control, which is basically thanks to our well-functioning animal health system. In addition to solving everyday problems, at the same time, there are also beautiful professional challenges pointing to the future, such as the fact that by 2030, a fifty percent reduction in antibiotics used in animal husbandry must be achieved. It is therefore no exaggeration to say that the role of veterinarians is indispensable in agriculture. This is the case in Hungary as well as throughout Europe – added the head of the agricultural ministry.
