ALDI US opens units in NYC
According to a report in the Financial Times, Aldi hopes to open its first store in New York City in the course of 2009, as it continues its steady US expansion.
Privately held Aldi has expanded to a
chain of almost 1,000 stores in the central and eastern USA since
1976, when it opened its first store outside Chicago. During 2008,
the discounter accelerated its expansion, opening more than 100 new
stores, up from about 50 a year previously. Aldi entered Florida,
where it opened 24 stores over a matter of weeks, and Rhode Island.
During 2009, Aldi plans to open a total of around 75 stores in the
US.
