That certain 3.2 million fish – Video of the day
A 243-kilogram bluefin tuna has sold for a record 510 million yen (about $3.2 million) at Tokyo’s Toyosu Fish Market in the first auction of 2026. The highest bid for the premium fish was made by Kimura Kiyoshi, owner of Kiyomura Corp., which operates the Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain, breaking his own record set in 2019.
At the dawn auction, buyers examined the torpedo-shaped tuna with its tail cut off, paying particular attention to the color, texture and fat content of the meat. The record-breaking specimen came from the Oma region in northern Japan, known for some of the country’s best tuna. Kimura said the purchase was part a tradition of good luck and part a passion for exceptional quality.
You must really love quality if you can afford to pay 4.4 million forints for a kilo of fish (bone-in and skin-out) – that’s about half the price of the world’s best caviar.
