Atradius: climate change cannot be prevented without a complete transformation of the energy sector
The electricity sector is the key to achieving carbon neutrality in the world by 2050, among other things, according to the Atradius credit insurance study. According to industry research, energy production is responsible for 75 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. However, the transformation of the sector is progressing very slowly and there is little innovation, even though 30 percent of the energy in the G7 member states should come from innovative technologies by 2050. Experts warn that there is an alarmingly low interest in investing in the research and development of renewable energy sources.
The credit insurance company’s study reminds us that the goal of carbon neutrality is to prevent the global average temperature from rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. To achieve this, carbon dioxide emissions would have to be significantly reduced by 50 percent by 2030. In 2020, during the pandemic, atmospheric pollution temporarily decreased, but in the following two years, greenhouse gas emissions increased at an unprecedented rate, reaching a 2 million year high. According to the country director of Atradius, it is difficult to resist cheap coal while the world’s energy demand is increasing. –
“Instead of gas, which became more expensive as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war, coal became the fuel of traditional power plants again, and this resulted in 36.8 gigatons of gas entering the atmosphere. The biggest polluter is the energy sector. At the same time, the basis for achieving the climate protection goals is precisely the transformation of energy production into a clean one. It follows that if there is a stall or delay in this, our world will not be carbon neutral by 2050”
