Europe’s largest land-based intermodal logistics terminal in Fényeslitke was handed over
Europe’s largest and most modern land intermodal terminal with a green concept was built in Fényeslitke, in the immediate vicinity of the Hungarian-Ukrainian border, in record time, with a private investment of more than HUF 40 billion.
The East-West Gate (EWG), located at the intersection of the broad and normal railway gauge, can transfer up to one million twenty-foot containers per year and is suitable for loading trucks and traditional road semi-trailers onto the railway. EWG also has a significant capacity for transshipment of agricultural products, so it could soon become the largest railway center for Ukrainian food exports. The first train carrying Ukrainian agricultural goods rolled into the terminal at the handover.
After the preparatory works, the construction of the East-West Gate terminal began in January 2021 on an area the size of Margaret Island, 85 hectares. A total of ten kilometers of standard and broad-gauge railway tracks and 225,000 square meters of concrete pavement were built at the terminal. Partners can also use a 15,000-square-meter warehouse, and it is also possible to establish additional warehouses and assembly plants in the 140-hectare development area. At the end of several months of successful technological and technical trial operation that began in March this year, EWG received the railway official license from the National Transport Authority in June.
