The awards for the Excellent Hungarian Honey of the Year competition were presented

The results of the varietal honey competition and this year’s best Hungarian honey were announced on Saturday at the 16th Gyula Honey and Gingerbread Festival.

In 2025, the excellent Hungarian honey of the year was the sunflower cream honey of the Borhi family from Erményes, which also won first place in the special honey category.

The best mixed flower honey was produced by the Dávid Beekeeping in Nagyfüged; The best acacia honey was submitted by Róbert Hanzel from Kaposmérő, who has won several awards in previous years. The best sunflower honey came from János Reith from Somberek.

The best rapeseed honey was submitted by János István Nagy from Szeghalm, and in the varietal honey category, the linden honey of Zoltán Vidók from Kiskőrös triumphed this year; and in the other variety honey category, the hawthorn honey of Balázs Szomor, also from Kiskőrös, won the first prize.

– János Árgyelán, competition director and Békés county expert advisor of the National Hungarian Beekeeping Association (OMME), informed MTI.

This year, 373 samples were submitted by beekeepers from all over the country to the call.

In the first round of judging, the experts paid attention to evaluation criteria such as purity, water content, characteristic color, honey variety the aroma, the purity of the taste, the packaging, as well as the harmony, the overall impression. This was followed by a laboratory test, where the water, pollen, glucose and fructose content and the so-called HMF were analyzed. The latter indicates whether the honey was heated or cooked or not.

Finally, a second round of judging determined the final ranking of the 43 items that advanced.

János Árgyelán said that the results and qualifications obtained in the competition give the honeys additional marketing value when sold.
