Production in kitchen gardens not only serves to preserve traditions, but also contributes to providing the population with healthy and safe food and strengthening the short supply chain – stated Imre Hubai, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, at the national award ceremony for the most beautiful kitchen gardens in Hungary, on Tuesday, in Karcag.

The State Secretary highlighted that this year was the 13th time the program had been announced, which had gained great popularity over the years, both here and abroad. By 2025, approximately 230 thousand gardeners from 868 settlements in eight countries had joined the initiative, and so far a total of 428 gardens had won the national award for the most beautiful kitchen garden in Hungary. Imre Hubai drew attention to the fact that the value of the program is also reflected in the cooperation of communities. In addition to the individual award winners, kindergartens, schools, community and parish gardens, and model farms will also receive recognition. The goal is not to leave a single abandoned, uncultivated garden around us, he added. He explained that gardening communities play a key role in preserving biodiversity and maintaining traditional production cultures. The Ministry of Agriculture considers it important to recognize and support these community initiatives, as they also set an example of perseverance and cooperation with nature for the younger generations.

The State Secretary also reminded that the Ministry of Agriculture also gives priority to the situation of small producers

In 2010, the government enabled direct sales by small producers, so that primary producers can deliver their products to consumers in local markets. The key to boosting horticulture is to combine local production with local sales. The short supply chain ensures that the benefits of the values born from Hungarian soil remain local.
