A ticket system could be used instead of a price cap
Although it is currently not possible to speak of a systemic food shortage in Hungary, customer experience shows that empty shelves can be found periodically and locally, especially in relation to price-stopped products – a new Portfolio article points out.
At the same time, we are constantly seeing product shortages in the fuel supply. Stores fight food shortages by introducing purchase limits. By the way, the ticket system that last operated in Hungary in the 1950s operates along a similar logic. It is true that it was under the authority of the state, and it was also stricter. But if it was really a big problem, could he come back now? And if so, in what form? The Ministry of Agriculture answered our questions about domestic basic food supply.
For a long time, before the pandemic and the inflation that followed, unseen for decades, no Hungarian thought that the official price could easily return to the life of our country after socialism. Today, however, it has absolutely become a part of our everyday life, and the longer the matter drags on, the more difficulties it causes the economy in the long term. Worrying signs are already visible, with regard to fuel, for example, shortages have become commonplace in several parts of the country, and even where there is an adequate amount of fuel, the amount that can be purchased at once is limited.
