Speaking to M1, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, Róbert Zsigó, said that since the introduction of the margin cut, the prices of several food and drugstore products have decreased. According to him, the measure, which came into effect in March, affected nearly a thousand products in 30 food categories. Of these, 836 products became cheaper by an average of 19.6 percent, while in the case of 276, the prices decreased by at least 30 percent.

The State Secretary also gave examples: in the event of the elimination, he said, the price of fine flour would be 80 percent higher, that of sour cream 72 percent, that of parivar 68 percent, and that of UHT milk 42 percent higher. Among drugstore products, the price of shampoo would increase by 54 percent and that of dishwashing detergent by 35 percent.

Zsigó added that if retailers tried to circumvent the margin stop, the government could broaden the scope of the measure, and in the final analysis, they did not rule out the introduction of an official price. According to the current concept, a margin of 10 percent is considered acceptable for food retailers and 15 percent for drugstore products.

The State Secretary also mentioned that the delivery of food vouchers worth 30 thousand forints to pensioners and those receiving pension-like benefits began on September 1. He told Kossuth Radio that as a result of the margin freeze, 412 drugstore products became cheaper by an average of 26.6 percent, and in the case of 158 of them the price reduction was at least 30 percent.
