The accredited laboratory of the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) is once again testing USB chargers, given last year’s 87% complaint rate. The aim of the inspections is to prevent unsafe products from reaching consumers, so the authority will withdraw them from the market. Sampling takes place from online stores, specialty stores, small shops operated in the Far East, and shopping centers.

Universal battery chargers can be found in almost every household, even in larger quantities. At the same time, countless devices are available in commercial circulation that are not safe: in the year 2025, the objection rate was extremely high, 87%, which especially justifies this year’s series of inspections. Such products are especially common on the Internet and in stores operated in the Far East. Based on previous inspection data, the mobile chargers available here almost without exception prove to be dangerous.

The laboratory tests mainly check the electrical strength of the insulation, the dimensions of the plug, and the design of the products combined with the road converter. The most common cause of the risk of electric shock is usually the inadequate separation of network parts, insulation deficiencies, and the location of conductive parts too close. During sampling, government offices under the professional supervision of the NKFH look for both built-in and USB chargers with a pluggable cable, and the connector can be USB-A, Micro-USB or USB-C. Sampling takes place in a wide range of areas, from online trade to specialty stores and convenience stores operated in the Far East to shopping centers.

If the Mechanical and Electrical Laboratory of the NKFH determines during the inspection that the product is not suitable and according to the risk assessment the danger is serious, high or medium, the authority will ensure that the product is withdrawn from circulation in order to prevent dangerous products from reaching the hands of customers.

In addition to official action, consumer awareness also plays an important role: it is not easy to recognize dangerous products from the outside, and therefore the NKFH asks customers to always purchase devices from a reliable source, primarily from a specialist store. Choose only certified chargers, avoid unknown brands, unknown origin or suspiciously cheap products, even if they look good on the outside. In addition, it is worth browsing the database of dangerous products available on the NKFH website (www.nkfh.gov.hu), where you can find the range of risky products examined by the authority.

Investigations by the NKFH and the government offices under its professional supervision are continuous throughout the year in order to ensure the safety of customers.
