By the second half of April, Hungarian strawberries are competitively priced with imports
In mid-March, the price of Greek imported strawberries was around HUF 2,000 per kilogram in Budapest markets, while Hungarian-grown strawberries could cost up to HUF 8,000 per kilogram. The Hungarian strawberries only became price competitive in late April, settling around HUF 2,000 per kilogram by late May.
This phase delay is due to the earlier start of the strawberry season in southern countries. High production costs in Hungary, necessitated by heating requirements in cooler weather, and competition from cheaper imported strawberries pose significant challenges for local producers. Despite the price disadvantage, quality and local patriotism still play a crucial role for Hungarian consumers.
