Mother and son defrauded a department store of millions of forints using fake bottle return coupons
Police have arrested a woman and her son who defrauded a Kiskunhalas department store of more than 3 million forints using fake refund certificates made for a bottle return machine, the Bács-Kiskun County Police Headquarters told MTI on Wednesday.
According to the information, the Kiskunhalas Police Headquarters began taking action based on a complaint last Friday, and within a few hours they managed to identify a 70-year-old woman and her 48-year-old son, who had been continuing their series of fraud since August 2024.
Initially, they attached fake barcode labels to non-returnable bottles and then returned them. Later, they changed their method and used fake coupons made at home – so-called vouchers – which they then redeemed at a self-service checkout. They only purchased smaller amounts, so they received the remaining amount back in cash.
The police questioned the couple as suspects and seized the money in their bank accounts. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are looking into whether similar crimes were committed in other stores.
