LG showcases antimicrobial material at K Show in Germany
LG Electronics (LG) unveiled its comprehensive portfolio of LG PuroTec™ antimicrobial additive solutions at the K 2025 International Plastics Trade Fair, one of the world’s leading plastics trade fairs, held in Düsseldorf from October 8-15.
LG’s advanced materials business is expanding globally, with the company’s latest product line debuting at the K Show in Germany. This year, LG participated in three of the largest international plastics trade fairs – Chinaplas in China, the National Plastics Exposition in the US and the K Show in Europe – to strengthen its global presence in the industry.
The PuroTec solution has broad applications in a variety of industries, including home appliances, healthcare, construction, packaging and automotive. In addition to the entire PuroTec portfolio, LG also showcased antibacterial plastics developed in collaboration with LG Chem, a global leader in chemical and materials development.
The company showcased five main PuroTec product lines at the exhibition: AAP, ABP, SAP, ZAP and AAW. LG PuroTec is a glass powder-based antimicrobial additive with antifungal and antibacterial properties that can be used effectively in the production of plastics, paints, powder coatings and textiles. It prevents the spread of microorganisms and their associated odors, helping to maintain the cleanliness and durability of products. Building on LG’s decades of experience in developing glass powders – and following its successful application in home appliances – PuroTec has become a key growth driver for LG’s B2B portfolio, with annual sales more than doubling year-on-year.
LG aims to expand its advanced materials technology business into new application areas, such as Marine Glass solutions that support marine ecosystem restoration and carbon reduction, and Mineral Wash technology that cleans textiles in an environmentally friendly way without surfactants. LG currently holds 420 patents related to glass powder technology and has a production capacity of 4,500 tons per year at the LG Smart Park plant in Changwon, South Korea.
In September 2025, LG signed a cooperation agreement with a global certification organization, SGS Korea, to develop international antimicrobial certification standards for PuroTec. Under the agreement, LG will share its technological expertise to develop certification processes, and SGS Korea will develop certification procedures that meet global standards. Products certified in this way can carry the SGS Global Performance Mark, which will signal transparency and reliability to international customers.
“LG PuroTec is more than an additive – it is a strategically important B2B growth engine that creates real value for our customers and various industries worldwide,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Home Solutions. “By strengthening collaborations with global partners, achieving international standardization and ensuring reliable performance, we aim to make PuroTec a cornerstone of LG’s materials technology business – driving sustainable growth and strengthening our leadership in the global market.”
