Thanks to the successful Hungarian agricultural lobby, Hungary will receive support from the European Union in the amount of 10.8 million euros, or 4.2 billion forints, to help producers affected by spring frost damage. All grape and fruit producers with a certified damage exceeding a 30 percent yield reduction will be eligible for this support, in addition to the damage mitigation allowance, announced Minister of Agriculture István Nagy, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) on Tuesday.

The spring frost significantly affected orchards, and in some places the extent of the damage reached 90 percent of the crop. In this situation, the AM, based on consultation with the sectoral interprofessional organization, created the opportunity for the early payment of part of the damage mitigation allowance. This allowed a total of 1.45 billion forints to reach the farmers who suffered damage in August, they wrote. István Nagy said in the statement that the ministry subsequently turned to the European Commission to provide funds from the agricultural crisis reserve to compensate for the damage caused by the frost. In accordance with last week’s decision, the opportunity was opened for 7 member states, including Hungary, to receive emergency financial support for agricultural sectors hit by adverse climatic events.

The budget available to Hungary must be paid to beneficiaries affected by frost damage by April 30, 2026.

Farmers who suffered damage will also receive assistance from the damage mitigation fund in the usual way, under the appropriate conditions – added the Minister of Agriculture, who reminded that almost 6,000 damage reports had been received on more than 37,000 hectares on the electronic damage reporting platform by May 31 – the statement reads.
