The protection and sustainable use of Hungary’s grasslands simultaneously serve the preservation of biodiversity, climate protection goals and the long-term competitiveness of agriculture – stated István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture, at the 3rd Grassland Management Professional Day, at the Kőszeg Evangelical Secondary School, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) on Thursday.

The Minister pointed out that the grassland habitats of the Pannonian region of the Carpathian Basin represent a unique natural value in Europe. From sandy wastelands to saline areas to mountain meadows, they are home to an extremely rich biodiversity, with approximately three-quarters of protected plant species and nearly half of protected animal species being associated with these habitats. The minister emphasized that the condition of grasslands has a direct impact on water management, food security and resilience to climate change, therefore their preservation goes beyond the boundaries of agriculture – the statement said. According to the information, the Minister of Agriculture reminded that there are more than 200 thousand hectares of grassland under the management of national park directorates, where continuous habitat management and restoration work is taking place. At the same time, the cooperation of farmers, professional organizations and local communities is essential to achieve nature conservation goals. Strengthening qualitative, nature-friendly grassland management instead of a quantitative approach is the way of the future – he added.

In response to this, Hungary’s first integrated project for nature conservation, Grassland-HU LIFE, was launched in 2019

The initiative, with a budget of almost 17.3 million euros, aims to improve the nature conservation status and long-term preservation of Pannonian grassland habitats. The project coordinator is the Herman Ottó Institute Nonprofit Ltd., and its partners include the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Hungarian Ornithology and Nature Conservation Association. As part of the program, a national advisory network assists farmers in Natura 2000 areas, and model farms demonstrate nature-friendly, yet economically sustainable practices – they explained. István Nagy particularly highlighted the role of the host institution, the Kőszeg Evangelical Secondary School conducts grassland management on 110 hectares, 90 percent of which is classified as Natura 2000. The “Rhein of the Year” award won in 2025 proves that agricultural production, biodiversity conservation and practical training of young people can be coordinated. The government particularly supports the entry of young people into agriculture, as the application of 21st-century technologies and the strengthening of a sustainable approach are essential for the future of the sector – the AM informed. The values of nature can only be preserved in the long term if we preserve them through responsible management and conscious professional cooperation. Hungarian grasslands represent a significant national value, and their protection and sustainable use are our common duty – István Nagy emphasized, according to the ministry’s statement.
