The government continues to pay special attention to preserving the stability of the domestic milk production sector and ensuring the liquidity of farmers. In addition to the December package of measures that primarily affect processors, producers who are in a difficult situation due to the low purchase price will also be helped with extraordinary means, so the government has also decided on another national subsidy of 2.43 billion, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy announced in a statement sent to MTI on Tuesday.

The head of the department emphasized that the EU and domestic support resources will arrive to the affected farmers earlier than usual, but at the same time, further effective steps are expected from the government following consultation with the actors of the sector. The final payment of the subsidy for dairy cows linked to production is taking place these days, but at the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture has also created the conditions for an additional HUF 2.43 billion subsidy to be paid to producers as a national subsidy, he noted.

The subsidy to be paid by the Hungarian State Treasury in the near future will affect around 2,300 farmers

At the same time, it is a direct response to the milk market crisis affecting the whole of the European Union, including Hungary, especially with regard to the protracted low milk purchase prices, which cause a significant loss of income for the players in the sector, he added. The purpose of the extraordinary support is to mitigate the adverse effects of overproduction at the EU level and the Chinese response to the EU’s customs policy actions, to partially compensate the deficit of milk producers, and to ensure the survival and operation of livestock farms until the market stabilizes. At Hungary’s initiative, the serious situation of the milk market was also on the agenda of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council, following which the Commission is closely monitoring the sector’s processes, he said. István Nagy emphasized: the producers can count on the government, which is committed to, in addition to making maximum use of the EU rules, to support the strategically important dairy sector with all possible means within its national competence, contributing to the security of the domestic food supply, the preservation of rural jobs and the strengthening of the market positions of Hungarian dairy products, even in the European market environment, which often changes drastically in the blink of an eye. That is why the Ministry of Agriculture – based on consultations with partner ministries – is also considering additional interventions and initiating their introduction – added the Minister of Agriculture.
