The work of professional organizations and research networks is essential for creating a competitive and sustainable agriculture, therefore the Ministry of Agriculture will renew its cooperation with the Ecological Agricultural Research Institute (ÖMKi) for another two years – Minister of Agriculture István Nagy announced, according to a statement from the ministry on Thursday.

The Minister emphasized that ÖMKi has been conducting research in the fields of sustainable farming, organic food production, and effective cooperation since 2011. In addition to research, the institute also conducts communication activities, placing great emphasis on popularizing the results as widely as possible and on the transfer of practical knowledge – the statement said. It was added that the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) currently supports this activity, and as part of the renewal of the contract, it will provide additional resources exceeding one billion forints from July 1, 2025. The program primarily presents organic farming as a good practice.

Their research shows that living interrow mulch significantly increases the number of beneficial organisms in plantations, which is also beneficial from a plant protection perspective

They have brought back landscape tomatoes, forgotten gems of our agricultural heritage, to home gardens. For years, tens of thousands of landscape seedlings nationwide have found their way to their owners with their help. This year, for example, the Herencsényi canning tomato – they introduced. They noted that in the field of animal husbandry, they successfully apply the most modern digital sensors in the most extensive, grazing-based beef cattle farming, so that the well-being and health of animals kept free most of the year is continuously ensured.

But their results are recognized not only at home, but also at the European level: the EU utilizes their participatory, practical research methods in numerous international projects

István Nagy explained that the research institute is obliged to compile thematic policy proposal packages from the research results in the next cycle. In line with the thematic areas, six packages will specifically help integrate the research results into the Hungarian agricultural policy. These measures will also help develop practices that support the agro-ecological transition and the development of organic farming in the long term – the Ministry of Agriculture informed. István Nagy said that in the new CAP Strategic Plan, the application of environmentally and climate-conscious farming practices and the related change of attitude, carried out in cooperation with farmers, and the active participation of farmers in the green transition will be emphasized even more than before – the announcement reads.
