AM: Carpathian Basin farmers’ organizations can continue to count on government support
We Hungarians around the world are like grains of wheat, we easily scatter individually, but together we become bread. The life of a Hungarian is different when he knows and feels: he is part of a nation – said István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture, at the Carpathian Basin Cohesion Forum on Tuesday, according to a statement sent by the ministry to MTI.

We must not only sow the seed, but also thank the sower – the minister said. The government has enshrined in the Basic Law that Hungary bears responsibility for Hungarian communities across the border. This statement is supported by a series of actions and support. Thanks to the government’s measures, Hungarian communities in the motherland and abroad have found each other again and the relations between us are constantly expanding, both in a human, friendly, allied and economic sense.
The Hungarian farming community of the Carpathian Basin is also an integral part of this process
Cooperation is strengthened by regular meetings and exchanges of experience. Furthermore, the government has established an institutionalised cooperation that is unprecedented in the region. Because a Hungarian farmer everywhere is a Hungarian farmer throughout the Carpathian Basin – said István Nagy. “Only together are we strong”, which is why the Carpathian Basin Cohesion Forum was established. This event is attended every year by the partner organisations of the Ministry of Agriculture, the leaders and representatives of civil agricultural associations uniting Hungarian farmers across the border, and foreign rural farmers also participate – they explained. We view foreign farmers as strategic allies, the love of the land also connects us, only together are we truly strong. The government and the Ministry of Agriculture provide programmes, scholarships and subsidies for the parts of the nation across the border every year. These measures will reach tens of thousands of Hungarian farmers from the mother country in all Hungarian-populated areas of the Carpathian Basin: in Transylvania, Partium and Banat, Upper Hungary, Vojvodina, Subcarpathia, the Drávaszög and the Mura region. The aim of the support systems is to ensure predictability, development and growth for Hungarian farmers, producers and agricultural entrepreneurs abroad. Approximately seventy percent of Hungarians abroad live in the countryside, and 25-45 percent of them make their living from agriculture. Therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure their survival, their prosperity in their homeland and the future of the Carpathian Basin with the support of the Hungarian state – the minister emphasized, according to the statement.
