In March 2026, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a favourable scientific opinion on the use of blue Galdieria extract as a food additive. During the assessment, the experts examined in detail toxicological data, digestive and metabolic processes, and genotoxicity. They concluded that the extract is safe at the recommended use levels, does not accumulate in the body, and does not show any adverse effects.

Galdieria is a microscopic, photosynthetic algae species from which a bright blue dye of natural origin can be obtained. This pigment could be a promising alternative to synthetic or other plant-based dyes, especially given the growing consumer demand for “clean-label” products. EFSA’s positive opinion is an important step in the EU authorisation process, and it is expected that blue Galdieria extract will be added to the EU list of authorised additives in the near future. This not only encourages innovation, but also helps manufacturers to offer more natural ingredients in their products. The colorant can be used in a wide range of applications: for example, in soft drinks, juices, smoothies, dairy products, ice cream and confectionery. The bright blue shade provides a particularly attractive visual appearance, which can increase the market value of the products. Blue Galdieria extract can contribute to the development of natural, safe and sustainable food. The use of such innovative ingredients can strengthen consumer confidence, while creating new opportunities for food companies to increase competitiveness.
