The EU’s artificial intelligence regulation is evolving
More than a hundred companies have joined the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Pact, which came into effect on August 1st, and aims to promote reliable and safe AI development. The signatories include both multinational companies and European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), from various sectors such as IT, telecommunications, healthcare, banking, automotive and aeronautics.
The purpose of the pact is for industrial players to voluntarily undertake the application of the EU rules on artificial intelligence even before they officially come into force. Companies must make voluntary commitments in addition to three basic measures. According to the European Commission, the initiative brings together key actors from industry, the civil sector and academia to work together on the regulation of artificial intelligence.
Although Meta Platforms does not intend to immediately join the convention, according to the Brussels statement, the pact supports cooperation between companies, researchers and government agencies to strengthen the ethical and safe development of artificial intelligence.
