The cherry season has started with low prices, a good harvest is not expected
This year, the cherry season started at low prices at the end of May, which, according to experts, shows a similar trend to the price development of the strawberry market. According to FruitVeB’s report, prices at the opening of the season are significantly lower than last year, despite the fact that a good harvest is not expected due to unfavorable weather conditions.
The prices of the first lots of Polish cherries on wholesale markets range from 10 to 16 zlotys (900-1,450 forints), which is drastically lower than last year’s starting prices of 20 zlotys (1,810 forints). These prices were typical before, two years ago around June 10, so this year the price of cherries stabilized earlier and at a lower level – writes vg.hu.
The cherries are already ripe in the Mediterranean countries and have also arrived on the markets of the northern regions, and in Romania they reached the markets even earlier than last year. However, traders in Romania are offering early imported cherries at the same price as last year’s season opening prices, which surprised buyers.
Overall, low starting prices and a poor crop outlook may cause concerns among growers and raise questions about the rest of the season.
