While the global agricultural and food market is characterized by the negative effects of climate change, extreme weather, and the uncertainty of international logistical disruptions, an innovative technology developed and manufactured in Hungary offers a solution to the challenges of stable, quality food production and maintaining indoor green spaces. With the help of LED technology, energy costs can be drastically reduced, while optimizing plant growth and – according to recent research – even their mineral and vitamin content.

Control group experiments are underway in several domestic research institutes to compare LED and traditional plant lighting systems. The first results are extremely positive, as significant energy savings can be achieved by using LEDs. Tests conducted with the Agricultural Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Martonvásár, the Grain Research Institute in Szeged, and the MTA SZBK in Szeged all show that LED lighting with the appropriate spectrum can be a competitive alternative in the future. Research is also underway to increase the mineral and vitamin content of plants with the help of the technology.

Optimized light spectrum according to the needs of plants

“At Ledium, we do not just sell lamps, but we provide our partners with a complete, precisely designed and domestically guaranteed technological solution. Our goal is to support the optimal development of plants with LED lighting throughout the year, whether it is precision in research institutes or green spaces in office buildings”

– stated Csaba Mesterházy, the founding owner of  Ledium Kft. , a domestic expert in LED technology with 20 years of experience, who with his company offers a complete develops and manufactures plant lighting systems.

Modern, targeted LED lighting has been proven to result in significant energy savings compared to traditional systems, while creating more stable, season-independent light conditions for cultivation. This is especially important in the winter months, when the amount of natural light drops drastically, the expert pointed out.

Ledium Kft. has now become a partner of most domestic research institutes and universities: they supply special climate chambers, light rooms, programmable spectrum systems and greenhouse LED solutions, which provide a predictable and easily controllable light environment tailored to research needs.

“With a modern LED system, the light spectrum and intensity required by researchers can be precisely modeled, and in some cases even fine-tuned beyond the capabilities of natural light. The special control can also be used by livestock farms, where light design is also a critical factor”

– he added.

A request from a research institute brought the company a breakthrough in the field of plant lighting. The company’s specialists also work with 3D light distribution design, so the necessary lighting can be calculated precisely in the design phase. This engineering thoroughness ensures that investments – which are based on quality raw materials and a long-term guarantee – pay off quickly and predictably.

Light that saves green spaces and saves millions in waste

Living plant walls and plant islands are also gaining more and more space in modern office buildings as symbols of sustainability and employee well-being.

Indoor green spaces also require year-round, continuous and adequate lighting, which traditional office lights cannot provide. With the help of professional LED lighting systems, green spaces become sustainable in the long term.

In addition, negotiations are underway with multinational DIY store chains to install additional LED lighting in the plant departments of commercial units in order to make the plants in the showrooms more attractive and survive. In addition to attractiveness, this investment will also reduce waste worth millions of forints, reported the founding owner of Ledium Kft.

Home green oasis

Home hobby greenhouses are experiencing a renaissance. “Although professional LED lighting for these smaller greenhouses can be more expensive, there is a growing demand for them to operate even during the winter months, with fresh, year-round plants. Home use can be achieved with smaller systems without any grid conversion.”
